Pick 6: Our Favorite Things for January/February

Live better with a few of our favorite things.

In each issue of Athlon Sports & Life, we pick six of our favorite things. They may be books, automobiles, gear, booze, apparel or whatever happens to be awesome. Here's what made our shortlist:

Hover HelmetsHover Helmets

Few items have captured more attention in our office than this gem. Each Hover Helmet is a half-scale size replica that’s suspended in air between two rare earth magnets. When plugged in, an electromagnetic force suspends the helmet mid-air where it hovers and rotates indefinitely…(or until a confused co-worker comes by and touches it.) To showcase it further, LED lights on the stand’s base illuminate it as it hovers. And yes, it really works. If you’re looking for a way to showcase your fandom at the office or Man Cave, look no further. $100 pegasussportsshop.com

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR12019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Considering the car’s heritage, when Chevy announced they were building the fastest, most powerful production Vette ever, we took notice. One look at its commanding stance, muscular lines, and that carbon-fiber halo hood/engine cover and we were hooked. It’s a production car that makes 755-horsepower from a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 that tops out at 212 mph. A seven-speed manual transmission and a ZR1-first paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission are also offered. Preliminary testing has shown 0-60 mph in under 3.0 seconds (because why not) and the quarter mile in the high 10-second range when the engine is equipped with the eight-speed automatic. Price: Around $120,000 chevrolet.com

Rufus Teague Honey Sweet Sauce

It’s always a good idea to have a go-to barbecue sauce. This thick Kansas City offering fits that bill perfectly. The honey shines with sweetness, while a touch of spice peeks through. It works great whether you’re brushing it on grilled meat—we slathered it on ribs and chicken—or dipping into it once it’s on your plate. Some other Rufus flavors we enjoy include Whiskey Maple (with boozy sweetness), and Blazin’ Hot (have some water handy…and a glass of milk). (3 pack ) $18 rufusteague.com

Adidas Terrex Fast GTX-SurroundAdidas Terrex Fast GTX-Surround

These hiking boots seem to wrap around your foot. They’re like pulling on a comfortable running shoe, providing a secure structure but with enough give and breathability that you never feel cramped or sweaty. And wow, are they incredibly lightweight, tipping the scale at a mere 13.6 ounces. But how do they handle the trail? We loved their sticky grip on dirt and rock (thanks to Continental rubber), the quick-laces (no need for frequent stops to re-tie), and they’re waterproof. But best of all, our feet felt fantastic at the end of our hike. $225 adidasoutdoor.com

Maker’s Mark Cask Strength Bourbon

The whisky-maker takes bourbon from the barrel to the bottle at 108 to 114 proof, hence the “cask strength.” The result? It puts a smile on your face and warms you from head to toe. The taste is rich and flavorful, with a dash of spice and vanilla. While it’s wonderful served neat, some may want to open it up with ice or water. Remember, it is up to 114 proof, after all. If you want to relax, unwind and enjoy a remarkable whisky, peel back the iconic red wax and pour you some. $50 makersmark.com

The TB12 Method

When a guy like New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is open to sharing his secrets to a better life, you start reading. This book features the five-time (perhaps six-time) Super Bowl champ’s take on hydration, nutrition, supplements, recovery, ways to reduce injury and an overall look at improving the quality of your life. Take note, this isn’t a book about building a better “looking” body, but building a “healthier” body. Sadly, it still won’t help you throw like Brady. $30 tb12sports.com
