Pick 6: Our Favorite Things for October

Live better with a few of our favorite things

In each issue of Athlon Sports & Life, we pick six of our favorite things. They may be books, automobiles, gear, booze, apparel or whatever happens to be awesome. Here's what made our shortlist this month:

Tapplock One

It's time to give up that old combination lock and enter the digital age with the world's first smart fingerprint padlock. This sturdy lock allows for up to 500 fingerprints—although we're not sure why you need that many—and multiple users. We tested it out with three users and a variety of fingerprints and found it to be sturdy, secure and, best of all, reliable. Because, let's face it, if you're coming back from the shower at the gym, you really need the lock to open. Set up takes less than 10 minutes, from downloading the app on your phone, to scanning fingerprints. The lock does require charging, but one two-hour charge will get you roughly 3,500 unlocks, so you can go several months between charges. In addition to using your fingerprint, it can also be unlocked via your smartphone app or using a Morse-Code combination by tapping the power button. Better yet, the futuristic look means you'll never confuse it with all the look-alike tumblers at the gym. $99 tapplock.com

Galvin Green Lance jacket

Galvin Green Lance Jacket

This is hands down the best golf jacket we've ever tested. It's lightweight and stretchable, giving you complete freedom in your swing. It's windproof, keeping biting breezes at bay on the open green. It's water repellent to keep you dry in light showers. And it's breathable, so sweat isn't trapped under your jacket, putting an end to that never-ending loop of zipping and unzipping to air out. We love the way it fits. The stretchable material (a polyester outer layer with a polyurethane membrane) is form-fitting—with elastic binding at the sleeves and an adjustable drawstring at the waist—that contours the body like a custom-fit jacket. $365 trendygolfusa.com / galvingreen.com

Chevy Colorado Bison

2019 Colorado ZR2 Bison

This mid-sized truck looks like it'll eat your wife's Subaru Outback. And it just might. The Bison is Chevy’s first collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), a premium off-road aftermarket manufacturer. We could tell you all about it, but it's much more fun to watch it at work...and play.

Osprey Arcane

Osprey Arcane

The legendary pack-maker is offering up a new urban line. The harness and backpanel are foam wrapped in a smooth breathable NeoSpacer material that will make your back and shoulders happy. If you're worried about security, the left shoulder strap can be removed (via a quick-release aluminum hook) and secured to a table or chair to keep thieves at bay. Visually it's a stylish yet minimalist look that blends in well at school or work. We tested it by loading it with two 15-inch laptops, an iPad, along with some extra clothes and snacks. It held up like a champ. Best yet, it comes with Osprey's "All Mighty Guarantee," which means they'll repair any damage or defect for any reason free of charge. $110 osprey.com

Samuel Adams OctoberFest

Samuel Adams OctoberFest

A long, long time ago, before refrigeration, March marked the end of the window that beer could be “lagered,” or put in cold storage. By doing this, the beer could age during the summer months and be enjoyed by fall harvest and during Oktoberfest. The result of this age-old tradition is a medium-bodied lager with a rich malt complexity, notes of caramel and toffee, and a smooth, sweet finish. In other words, it's a beer perfect for fall tailgating with a giant pretzel. $9 (six pack) samueladams.com
