For fantasy baseball in 2018, second base is all about the Joses. Jose Altuve should surprise no one as he is a top-five overall player this season, not to mention the reigning AL MVP. Jose Ramirez had a fantastic 2017 season, which has vaulted him to the second spot in my rankings thanks to his ability to do it all, including hitting for average (.318) and power (29 home runs).
Brian Dozier comes in at No. 3 with his power and run scoring potential in a Twins lineup that appears even stronger this year. In fact, second base offers more power in 2018 than in recent seasons, along with modest speed with a few elite stolen base options, namely Dee Gordon and Altuve.
The prospects at second base that everyone will be watching this season include the likes of Yoan Moncada, Ozzie Albies and Jose Peraza. Perhaps next season they will move in to the top 10. For now they are mid- to late-round fliers with upside in redraft leagues.
And let’s not forget about the old guard — guys like Ian Kinsler, Jason Kipnis, Robinson Cano, and of course Dustin Pedroia. Even though their speed is long gone, these guys should still be able to help in other categories, especially considering second is one of the shallowest positions in fantasy baseball in 2018.
Either way I hope these rankings help you build your tiers and with your draft prep for the 2018 season. These will change as spring training progresses and teams adjust their rosters.
