MLB World Reacts to Shohei Ohtani Injury News
The Los Angeles Dodgers will begin the 2025 season with the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo, Japan, for a pair of opening games. Unfortunately, Shohei Ohtani will likely not be able to pitch after left shoulder surgery in November. However, he should be able to hit, per manager Dave Roberts via USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
“Very unlikely," Roberts responded when asked about Ohtani's pitching availability. “I just don't see us starting the clock in March to then think that we would keep that continuously going through October. Then, that would call for a break or reprieve in the middle of the season, so I don't know.
“I still think unlikely."
Fans flocked to social media to discuss the Dodgers options without Ohtani on the mound.
"Did he announce if Roki would start in his place ?" one fan said, referencing the next young Japanese phenom who has yet to join an MLB team.
"So, probably Yoshinobu and Snell," another fan noted.
"Bruh I thought he was gonna pitch in the World Series," shared a poster.
"I do not believe he will pitch this year. If ever again," one doubting fan commented.
Ohtani has not pitched since August 2023. He sustained an ulnar collateral ligament tear, which required surgery, and did not pitch for the remainder of that season and 2024.
Although he won't be able to pitch, he should be fine to resume his designated hitter duties for the Dodgers at the start of the 2025 MLB season.
