TheNew York Metshanded rookie outfielder A.J. Ewing a new opportunity Friday, slotting him into the leadoff spot for the first time in his major league career ahead of their matchup against theAtlanta Bravesat Truist Park.

The lineup places the 21-year-old center fielder ahead ofJuan Soto,Bo BichetteandFrancisco Lindor, giving him his first opportunity to bat leadoff in the majors after a productive rookie season.

Ewing has quickly become an important piece of New York’s lineup since making his major league debut on May 12.

The left-handed hitter was selected in the fourth round of the 2023MLBDraft and entered the season as one of the organization’s top prospects because of his speed, defense and ability to get on base.

Through 47 games this season, Ewing is batting .268 with a .352 on-base percentage, four home runs, 19 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

His all-around production has helped him earn regular playing time while providing a spark near the top of the lineup.

Batting leadoff for the first time represents another milestone in the young outfielder’s development.

His combination of speed, plate discipline and contact ability makes him a natural fit to set the table for the middle of New York’s order while giving the Mets another way to generate offense.

The Mets entered Friday with a 36-51 record, sitting fifth in the National League East.

Although the club has struggled throughout the season, Ewing has been one of its brightest spots since arriving in the majors.

Friday’s game also featured Christian Scott taking the mound for New York against Atlanta right-hander Grant Holmes.

The Mets will look to open the series with a victory while Ewing gets his first opportunity to lead off in the major leagues.
