Nationals acquire reliever Carpenter from Yankees

Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Nationals acquired right- handed reliever David Carpenter from the New York Yankees on Thursday in exchange for minor league infielder Tony Renda.

Carpenter was designated for assignment by the Yankees on June 3 after posting a 4.82 ERA in 22 appearances out of the bullpen. The five-year major league veteran has a career 3.73 ERA in 210 games for Houston, Toronto, Atlanta and the Yankees.

Renda, a second-round pick by Washington in 2012, was hitting .267 in 54 games for Double-A Harrisburg.

The Nationals, in Milwaukee to play the Brewers, activated pitcher Sammy Solis from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Harrisburg to make room for Carpenter.

They transferred Nate McLouth to the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from right labrum surgery last August.
