Mets' Carlos Mendoza Announces Injury News on Infielder

The New York Mets have rushed out to 11-5 in their first 16 games of the 2025 season, a much improved start from their 8-8 mark to begin last season. But despite this fast start, not everything has gone well in Queens.

While the Mets pitching staff has been one of the best, if not the best in MLB, their offense can't say the same. The Mets' offense currently ranks 12th in the National League with a measly .667 OPS. They also rank 11th in slugging at .367 and 12th in on-base percentage at .300, but some additional reinforcements could be on the way.

Infield prospect Ronny Mauricio may soon be headed back up to Queens, as he is set to begin his rehab assignment for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate. Speaking with reporters, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza commented on the timeline of Mauricio.

“The fact that he's now in game action is certainly a good sign,” he said (h/t John Flanigan of SNY). “We just want him to get at-bats in extended -- hopefully, we'll get him some reps in the field, and we'll see how it goes from there."

Mauricio has been a top prospect in the Mets system for several seasons now and enjoyed a brief stint in Queens during the 2023 season. In 26 games, the young infielder slashed .248/.296/.347 for a .643 OPS.

The 24-year-old has seen some success in the Mets' minor league system with a career .754 OPS, and his potential is obvious. In his first major league at-bat, he cracked a 117.3 MPH double, which was the hardest hit ball all season for the Mets.

His scouting profile describes a player with raw natural power and the athleticism and arm talent to be a plus infielder defensively. With some recent questions at second base, Mauricio could carve out a role for himself in New York.
