Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Cincinnati Reds second baseman will have surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb Friday, the team announced.
He is expected to be out six weeks.
Phillips suffered the injury during Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs while making a diving play on an Anthony Rizzo grounder.
The 33-year-old is hitting .272 with seven homers and 40 RBI so far this season.
In addition, Homer Bailey, who exited Thursday's outing with a slightly strained right knee, is expected to make his next start.
