TheToronto Blue JaysandLos Angeles Dodgersdelivered one of the most memorable World Series matchups inMLBhistory last year. The Dodgers emerged victorious, extending the Blue Jays’ championship drought to 33 years.

With both clubs built around elite cores, a long-term rivalry has begun to take shape. However, their 2026 seasons have opened very differently.

Los Angeles continues to dominate the National League West, while Toronto has battled injuries and entered Tuesday in fourth in the American League East.

Toronto is also getting healthier. Designated hitter George Springer is expected to return from the 10-day injured list this week. However, with the 40-man roster full, a corresponding move was required, and it came Tuesday in the form of a trade with the Dodgers.

The Blue Jays announced they had dealt infielder Tyler Fitzgerald to Los Angeles in exchange for cash considerations.

Fitzgerald had been designated for assignment last week, and the Dodgers moved to acquire him. He never appeared in a game for Toronto and had only been with the organization since early April. The Blue Jays traded for him after he was DFA’d by theSan Francisco Giants.

Los Angeles has the ability to option Fitzgerald to the minor leagues, which is the likely outcome.

The 28-year-old is two seasons removed from a strong 2024 campaign in which he slashed .280/.334/.831 over 96 games. He has not hit at that level since.

Still, his defensive versatility, with experience across the infield and outfield, made him appealing to the Dodgers. Fitzgerald struggled at Triple-A Buffalo, which led to Toronto designating him for assignment.

For the Blue Jays, the move clears the necessary roster space as they prepare to activate Springer, a big step for a team trying to regain its footing after an inconsistent start.
