NASCAR Starting Lineup for Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway

Rookie Daniel Hemric on the pole for as playoff field set to get whittled to eight

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series closes out the second round of its 2019 playoffs this weekend with its second visit to Kansas Speedway. Kyle Larson and Ryan Blaney have already locked themselves into the Round of 8 with wins at Dover International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, respectively. However, 10 more drivers will fight for the remaining six spots to keep their championship hopes alive one more week.

Rookie Daniel Hemric scored his first career pole with a 178.047 mph lap, and he'll start alongside David Ragan. Team Penske teammates Blaney and Brad Keselowski start together on row two, while Larson rounds out the top five as the third and final playoff driver to qualify inside the top 10.

Clint Bowyer and William Byron, who are both currently below the cut line heading into the final race to set the next round, qualified outside the top 20. They'll start 21st and 25th, respectively.

Forty cars showed up to compete for 40 spots on the grid. That meant no one failed to qualify for Sunday’s race.

QUALIFYING NOTES

  • Kevin Harvick will start at the rear of the field after he wasn't allowed to qualify due to inspection issues. Additionally, his car chief was ejected from the track this weekend and he'll lose 30 minutes of practice at Martinsville Speedway next weekend.
  • Both Front Row Motorsports drivers qualified inside the top 10 under the cloud cover Saturday morning. Ragan, who posted his second top-10 starting position in 2019, starts second, while Michael McDowell, who held the top spot until Hemric posted his lap, starts sixth.
