What are Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s retirement plans?

Dale Jr. won’t be racing cars anymore, but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down. The 43-year-old and his wife, Amy, are expecting their first child. The father-to-be announced the good news by posting a picture of pink baby shoes on Instagram in October. He will also be joining NBC Sports’ NASCAR coverage in July 2018. The 14-time Cup Series Most Popular Driver plans to take a crash course in announcing.

“Considering I’ve never worked as a broadcaster before, I’m going to spend all my time trying to prepare myself,” Earnhardt says. “NBC put me in front of people who can help me get prepared for that job. I’ve got to learn all that in a short period of time. I’ll be pretty busy doing that to make sure I’m ready and feel confident and can do a good job.”

Dale Jr. is also hoping to spend more time with friends and growing family in his native North Carolina. “My sister (Kelley) bought some property down the road, and now we’re moving my mom (Brenda Gee) into Kelley’s house. Mom is just over the moon about it,” Earnhardt says. “Maybe on one of my first weekends away from the track we’ll have a pool party or something. That’s probably as exciting as it’s going to be.”
