College hockey roundup: SCSU wins late, big losses for Gopher men, UMD, MSU
It was a busy night of college hockey in Minnesota Saturday, with several teams beginning early season play.
Vermont 3, Minnesota men 0
The Gopher men were shut out 3-0 in their season opener at Mariucci Arena Saturday night. Their young team wasn't able to stop Vermont, and they couldn't get past the Catamounts' goalie Mike Santaguida – failing to score on any of their four power plays.
Freshman goalie Eric Schierhorn, who made his first career start for the Gophers, had 24 saves. Vermont's Mario Puskarich scored two goals against him, according to Gopher Sports.com. The Catamounts added an empty-netter late in the game for their third goal.
The Gophers have a nonconference home-and-home series with Minnesota Duluth next weekend. The Gophers host the Bulldogs at Mariucci Arena on Friday and will head to Duluth for a Saturday evening game.
Bemidji State 3, UMD 2
Speaking of the Bulldogs, they lost to Bemidji State Saturday night in Bemidji, when the Beavers scored the winning goal with 22 seconds left in the game, according to Bulldogs sports.
It was the season opener for both teams, which came a day later than originally planned. They were meant to play the first game of a home-and-home series Friday night at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, but it was postponed due to a power outage at the venue.

St. Cloud State 6, Alaska-Anchorage, 2
The 17th-ranked St Cloud Statue University emerged victorious from a late game played in Alaska.
Robby Jackson scored his first two college goals in the first period on the ice. The freshman from Alameda, California sat out as a healthy scratch in the season-opener,
The St. Cloud Times notes that with the win, the Huskies went 2-0 to win the Kendall Hockey Classic tournament there. SCSU will open it home season on Oct. 16-17 against Minnesota State-Mankato at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Mavericks are the defending WCHA champions.
Nebraska Omaha 2, Minnesota State Mankato 0
Nebraska Omaha shut out Minnesota State 2-0 Saturday night in Mankato, completing a series sweep of the No. 9 ranked team in the country. UNO's Evan Weninger made 40 saves in his season debut in the net, and Jake Randolph scored both goals for Omaha.
The two teams vie each year for the Spirit of the Maverick Trophy, since both teams are nicknamed the Mavericks. The two-game sweep helped UNO hang on to the trophy, which it has had since the 2009-10 season.
Minnesota women 11, St. Cloud State 0
The Gopher women scored eight goals in the second period of their Saturday afternoon game, setting a new NCAA record, en route to an 11-0 win. Three of those goals came within a span of just 32 seconds, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
The Gophers (4-0, 2-0 WCHA), ranked No. 1 in the country, have not allowed a goal to be scored against them so far this season, according to the newspaper.
