Fulton Captures Crucial Breakaway Roping Win at Comal County Rodeo
NEW BRAUNFELS, T.X.- With the PRCA regular season at a wrap, it was definitely a season to remember. As an athlete, if you didn't make it to the Cinch Playoff's Governor's Cup, you were scrambling for a rodeo. Saturday night was the last chance for any of the pro rodeo athlete's earnings for the 2023 season to count towards their qualification towards the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas.
The 130th Comal County Fair & Rodeo left it's mark on the fans, contestants, and everybody who helped make this rodeo possible year in and year out. Legendary rodeo clown, Leon Coffee, made his annual appearance as well. Sadly, we didn't get to see him blow up any cars or perform silly skits this year. But no doubt, he kept the crowd entertained all three nights.
Bareback Riding
No. 16 Cole Franks was pushed out of the top-15 world standings this weekend by some fellow athletes at the Governor's Cup, nonetheless he still picked up the win in New Braunfels with an 83-point ride on Lancaster and Cude Pro Rodeo's "Unforgiven Too". Mason Yancy followed behind him in second place with an 80.5 point ride. Third place was given to Kash Martin and his 75-point ride.
Tie-Down Roping
Ace Slone took home the tie-down roping title with just a 9.2. Coming in second is Ryan Thibodeaux, and in third, Monty Lewis. Broken barriers got quite a bit of athletes in Comal County.
Saddle Bronc Riding
Another tragedy happened over the weekend when Comal County's saddle bronc winner Isaac Diaz was pushed out of the top-15. Diaz won on Lancaster and Cude Pro Rodeo's "Total Chaos" on a 79.5-point ride. Curtis Garton trailed closely behind in second with a 78-point performance. 76 points is what it took for Brady Hill to capture third place.
Team Roping
As for the team ropers, Kolby Krieger and Zane Pratt got to take home the buckle with an impressive 4.2-second run. There was a tie for second at 4.7-seconds between Jake Ormen/Corey Hendrick and Kreece Thompson/Landen Glenn.
Barrel Racing
Preslie Reid and her horse pulled off a 15.73-second run around the barrels to bring home the buckle. In second, was Ilyssa Riley and her 16.01 run. By the hair on her chin, Sydney Graham came in third with a 16.08 run.
Breakaway Roping
Samantha Fulton and her road to the NFR made a crucial stop in New Braunfels, when she won the breakaway roping title with a 2.3-second run, putting $1,470 in her pocket and towards the world standings. Taylor Hanchey, wife of world champion tie-down roper Shane Hanchey, came in close second with a 2.4-second go. Brighton Bauman followed into third with 2.5-seconds.
Bull Riding
Seven-time world champion Sage Kimzey did not disappoint with his 88.5-point ride on Lancaster and Cude Pro Rodeo's "Brute" to win the title for the second time in Comal County. Cayn "The Man" Jolly came in second with his 86.5-point ride, with a name like that you gotta give the man some style points. Maverick Potter, who qualified for the NFR last year, came in third place with an 84 point ride.
Fulton also split the win with Kaitlyn Harwell on a 1.9-second run at the Southern New Mexico State Rodeo in Las Cruces, NM. With earning another pay check for $1,354, we will have to wait for the official standings to post to see if Fulton will qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Dec.
