Assisting Spirit: Pacers Tyrese Haliburton Gives Back to Hometown
Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton spent his week giving back to the kids of his hometown in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Since winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, Haliburton has spread his championship cheer. Haliburton's giving ways are nothing new in the pong guard's career.
Tyrese Haliburton is a rarity in today's NBA. Gone are the Steve Nash and John Stockton type of stars, where teammates come first. Haliburton and Denver Nuggets champion Nikola Jokic are the standouts of a yesteryear player, and Jokic isn't even a point guard by position. Nonetheless, Haliburton's selfless attitude comes from his parents sacrificing for the greater good of his future.
"My mom has been my everything for me to get here. I can't even put into words to explain everything but I'm just really appreciative of you, Mom, because of all the stuff of us growing up and pushing me to be where I am today," Haliburton said. "making sure I could get to every trip, making sure my teammates made it to every trip — it just means a lot to me so I love you and I'm really appreciative of you."
If Haliburton's mother (Brenda Haliburton) can sacrifice, then so can he.
The gold medalist hosted a free basketball camp of over 150 kids.
Despite winning gold, Haliburton made sure to make himself available to the fans, and more importantly, the future of the sport and the country in general.
“I think it’s important that people don’t think of me as like a mythical being, [so] I want to be in front of them [and] I want to be seen,” Haliburton said of the importance of hosting the camp.
The Pacers open their season on the road against the Detroit Pistons. Indiana is hoping to benefit from the feel-good energy of Haliburton and his gold medal experience.
