Jaylen Brown Bracing for Punishment After Celtics-Pistons
Without Team USA stars Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday, the Boston Celtics secured their second straight victory on Wednesday night: a 130-120 win over the Detroit Pistons at TD Garden.
Jaylen Brown led the charge for the defending NBA champions, tallying a game-high 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting, with six rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Center Kristaps Porzingis, in his fourth game since returning from injury, chipped in 26 points and nine rebounds.
But it was Brown who had one of the highlights of the night.
Shortly after Pistons star Cade Cunningham threw down a dunk on Derrick White, the former California Golden Bears star responded with a poster of his own. With 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Brown drove hard to the rim and dunked over Detroit center Isaiah Stewart using both hands.
Following the impressive slam, Brown stared right at Stewart and gave a throat-slashing gesture toward him in celebration.
After the game, the Boston Globe's Gary Washburn asked Brown if he expects to hear from the league following his reaction to the dunk.
"Oh yeah," Brown said.
The No. 3 pick in the 2016 NBA draft likely has a heavy fine from the NBA coming his way. Former Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade made a similar gesture during a 2016 game against the Celtics, Brown's rookie season. The Miami Heat legend was promptly fined $25,000 for his actions.
In 2013, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant, now with the Phoenix Suns, was also fined $25,000 for the same actions as Brown and Wade.
With the win over Detroit, Brown and the Celtics have improved to 18-4, which is good for second place in the Eastern Conference behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, as proven as Boston may be, it will no longer be competing for the NBA Cup after being eliminated on Tuesday.
