Cavaliers rookie Windler to miss 4-6 weeks with leg issue

The Cavaliers have yet to begin training camp but already have a dose of injury news.

It's centered on rookie small forward Dylan Windler, the second of the team's three first-round picks, and it involves Windler's leg.

According to the Cavs, Windler recently experienced some discomfort in his lower left leg while working out with his teammates. He is expected to be out anywhere from four to six weeks with what is being called a stress reaction.

The Cavs just completed an informal trip to New York, organized by Kevin Love, where they played some basketball and did some bonding.

On the bright side, the Cavs enter camp with an abundance of wing-types. The list includes Cedi Osman, Sindarius Thornwell, Jordan Clarkson and rookie Kevin Porter Jr. Love is also a former 3-point Shootout champion.

Windler was selected with the No. 26 overall pick in June, becoming the first Belmont product taken in the draft since 1972. (And only the second Belmont player ever.)

He is a 6-foot-8 lefty and averaged 21.3 points and 10.9 rebounds last season, shooting 43 percent on college 3-pointers. He was the only player in the country to average at least 20 points, 10 boards and 2.5 assists while shooting 40 percent on threes.

The Cavs selected Vanderbilt point guard Darius Garland with the fifth overall pick, then traded with the Detroit Pistons for the 30th pick, which they used to take Porter Jr.

Training camp begins Tuesday, with the first preseason game slated for Oct. 7 vs. Argentinian club San Lorenzo de Almagro at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
