Musselman, Kidd likely to draw interest for Cal vacancy

Along with being linked to the Los Angeles Lakers, former NBA point guard and coach Jason Kidd is likely the primary target for the coaching vacancy at California, according to John Canzano of the Oregonian.

Former NBA coach Eric Musselman, who led Nevada to the Sweet 16 last season, is likely also to be on Cal's "short list" of candidates, Canzano reported.

Cal fired coach Wyking Jones on Sunday following an 8-24 season.

Kidd compiled a 183-190 record in four-and-half seasons with the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks. He was 23-22 when fired by the Bucks last season.

Before that, he was a hall-of-fame point guard with the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Nets and New York Knicks. He retired from playing in 2013.

AmicoHoops reported of the Kidd-Lakers connection in early February, and ESPN reported the same Sunday. Kidd played his college ball at Cal.

Musselman is the son of late former Ashland University and Cleveland Cavaliers coach Bill Musselman and a product of Brecksville High School near Cleveland.

Eric Musselman has been the head coach of the Golden State Warriors (2002-04) and Sacramento Kings (2006-07), as well as in the old Continental Basketball Association and the G League.

He has been an NBA assistant with the Orlando Magic, Memphis Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks, an assistant in the college ranks with Arizona State and LSU.

He took over as Nevada's head coach in 2015 and had led a once-downtrodden program to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including a spot in the Elite Eight last season. Nevada was eliminated in the first round by Florida this year.
