Russell, Cavs honor legendary Thurmond

Akron native and NBA Hall-of-Fame center Nate Thurmond was a key member of the Cavaliers' "Miracle of Richfield" run of 1976.

The Miracle season came late in Thurmond's career, at the age of 34 and after an outstanding stretch with the Warriors. Still, he came off the bench and led the team as a veteran, winning voice.

He played alongside the likes of Austin Carr, Campy Russell and Jim Chones, and will forever be cherished by the organization and its fans.

The Cavs celebrated the 40-year anniversary of the Miracle of Richfield this past season -- prior to winning the first championship in franchise history.

Thurmond passed away Friday, succumbing to a brief battle with leukemia. NBA legend Jerry West called it "an extremely difficult day for me."

Russell released the below statement on behalf of the Cavs. Nate Thurmond was 74.

STATEMENT FROM RUSSELL, CAVS

We are very saddened by the loss of Nate Thurmond. Nate’s jersey hangs in the rafters at The Q because of the unselfish way the Akron native and Hall of Famer approached the game we all love, the teammate that he was, his profound impact on one of the most special seasons in Cavaliers history, and the way that all translated on and off the court to reflect the 'All for One. One for All.' code.

Just as Nate always held the Miracle team, the Coliseum crowds and his local roots dear to him, the Cavaliers franchise will always love and respect him as a true Cavalier legend.

We extend our deepest condolences to Nate's wife, Marci, and their family during this difficult time.
