'It's a blessing': Rob Dillingham excited to join Timberwolves
New Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Rob Dillingham had nothing but positive things to say about the team that traded for him Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old spoke with reporters, saying "it's a blessing" he's able to learn from "players that are real good."
"It's a blessing for real. It just shows that they... are trusting in me to develop. And if they trust me, that's all that's needed," Dillingham said.
The 6-foot-2 talented guard was drafted No. 8 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs before he was immediately traded to Minnesota.
The Spurs had already drafted in what they believe is going to be their point guard of the future at No. 4 — Stephon Castle of UConn — so they picked Dillingham and received an unprotected first-round pick in 2031 and a second-round pick swap in 2030.
During his only season as a Wildcat, Dillingham averaged 15.2 points and 3.9 assists on 50/45/80 shooting splits. He was a 2023-2024 All-SEC selection and the SEC Sixth Man of the Year.
Dillingham also spoke with NBA TV's Taylor Rooks on heading to the Timberwolves.
"I feel like I can be as much of a help as they need me to be and whatever they need me to do. I feel like I can come in and do it," the North Carolina native said.
Rooks asked about joining star Anthony Edwards, to which the younger hooper initially shook his head with a big smile.
"I don't even know what to expect, honestly. You know what Anthony Edwards brings, so you know what to expect from him. I'll definitely be working too, so, I don't know what to expect yet but you'll definitely see when the season comes," he said.
He also told Rooks:
NBA insider Kevin O'Connor showed his excitement on X for the Wolves' future backcourt, just as fans have. ESPN's Jay Bilas also called the young point guard "a hooper," saying "that guy can score."
