AJ Dillon is one of the bigger running backs that should hear his name called in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. His size should benefit him as he makes the transition to the pros but it also could limit his appeal to some teams based on what they are looking for in a running back. But in the right offense, Dillon could become a valuable contributor as part of a timeshare.
AJ Dillon Draft Profile
College: Boston College
He was a man among boys in college, and at his size, it won’t be much different for Dillon in the NFL. He’s a massive back who has the pure power to simply steamroll defenders at the second and third level. He’s a long strider with deceptive straight-line speed, and if he gets a head of steam coming out of the backfield, he can break off long runs.
A lack of twitch limits him as far as what most teams look for in 2020. He’ll take a little while to get going, and he’s a fairly straight-line runner (with the exception of the occasional spin). That makes him reliant on his blocking to create running lanes for him to take advantage of. He’s been a non-factor in the passing game at the collegiate level and figures to be little more than a checkdown option in the NFL.
He has a little bit of Derrick Henry in him, though his feet aren’t quite as good. Dillon won’t appeal to everyone, but a team that gets under center sometimes and runs some power will be getting a useful — and perhaps at times dominant — committee back.
Final Grade: 3rd/4th round
