Ohio State has had five defensive backs taken in the first round of the past four drafts and cornerback Jeff Okudah will add to that total in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. The No. 1 defensive back prospect and a top-five player oval, Okudah has all of the tools to be a shutdown corner in the NFL.
Jeff Okudah Draft Profile
College: Ohio State
The latest in what has become an impressive pipeline of cornerbacks out of Columbus, Okudah is a big corner who plays to his size but also has some small-man traits. He is exceptionally quick, able to mirror early in the down out of just about any technique, but truly special when it comes to closing on the ball. He can play off the ball, and his quickness combined with his length and sense of timing allows him to get his hand in and break up passes. He’ll continue to improve in that area the more reps he plays. He has the patience along with the fluidity to flip his hips and run in press coverage, and he has the core strength to get his hip into a receiver and escort him out of bounds when working the sideline. Recovery speed is there when he does lose a step, and he does a nice job getting his head around and locating the ball, avoiding penalties. He’ll come up and support the run on the perimeter as well.
Just a one-year starter due to Ohio State's absurdly talented cornerback depth chart, Okudah could be susceptible to biting on double moves or other veteran tricks. More ball production would have been nice at the collegiate level, but the limited playing time combined with teams avoiding him when he did get on the field makes that an even more minor concern than it normally could be.
He gets a lot of Jalen Ramsey comps, and they are pretty much spot-on. Okudah is a true No. 1 corner who will be able to travel with opposing No. 1 receivers and fits into any scheme. It would be a surprise if he didn’t become a star.
Final Grade: Top-10 pick
