Carlos Basham Jr. Draft Profile
College: Wake Forest
A powerful edge player with a violent and high-motor approach, Basham was consistently disruptive at the collegiate level. He fires off the snap with a quick first step and uses his length and strong, active hands to threaten the inside shoulder of tackles and shoot into the backfield, often preferring to take the shortest distance from Point A to Point B. He’ll get low and drive blockers back into the pocket. He plays with natural balance, and his energy rarely stalls. His closing burst is very good; as a run defender, he’ll chase down a lot of plays in pursuit.
He was something of a man among boys in college, and there’s some concern about how well his game — which has relied too much on overpowering lesser athletes — will translate to the next level. He’s less an edge bender and much more reliant on shooting inside and getting upfield quickly; he’s at risk of running himself out of plays with that approach.
He isn’t the cleanest fit, but with his burst, power and motor, Basham is a boom-or-bust playmaker at the next level.
Final Grade: 1st/2nd round
