2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Betting Odds

T.J. Watt, Pittsburgh Steelers

Reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt is the co-favorite to win the award for the upcoming 2022 season.

The NFL Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) futures market finds three players listed at single-digit odds distanced well ahead of the rest of the field.

Among the top contenders is Aaron Donald, a three-time DPOY winner, who slides in as the third overall betting choice at +750. Donald, who helped lead the Rams to the franchise’s second Super Bowl victory, is arguably the best defensive tackle in the history of the NFL. The dominant interior lineman has posted 98 sacks in 127 career games but could struggle to keep his streak of 11-plus sacks in five consecutive seasons now that Von Miller will no longer be demanding attention on the other side of the Los Angeles defensive front.

T.J. Watt (+700), who led the league in sacks (22.5) last season, is the reigning DPOY but he has company atop the betting board. Cleveland’s dominant defensive Myles Garrett, who has recorded 10-plus sacks in four of his first five seasons in the NFL, is listed as the co-favorite at odds of+700 at DraftKings with Watt to earn the award for the first time.

The last player from the secondary to be named NFL DPOY was Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu back in 2010. This season, Stephon Gilmore of the Colts is joined by Jalen Ramsey of the Rams and Jaire Alexander of the Packers as the first cornerbacks listed in the market at longshot odds of +5000.

Several players to consider investing in are Dallas linebacker Micah Parsons (+1000), Las Vegas defensive end Maxx Crosby (+2800), and Los Angeles safety Derwin James Jr. (+3500). Parsons, who secured 13 sacks in his rookie campaign, could be poised to approach the 20 sack mark in 2022. Meanwhile, Crosby, who now has Chandler Jones drawing attention, is primed to be the leader of a Raiders squad with high expectations. If James can increase his overall interception production, while also being utilized more as a pass rusher on blitz situations he could be the best sleeper value in the DPOY futures market.
