49ers Announce Official Injury Diagnosis For Defensive Star

San Francisco 49ers' Levi Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers have a concerning update on one of their best defensive players. Star defensive lineman Arik Armstead has suffered a knee injury and will miss some time.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan announced this Friday that Armstead, 28, sprained his MCL during training camp this week. Although it's not believed to be too serious, Armstead is going to miss several weeks.

“It’s nothing we’re too concerned about but it will take him some time away,” Shanahan said, via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. “He thought it was just a bruise, because it didn’t bother him that bad, but it was hurting him a little after, then got the MRI, so we’ve got to hold him out a little bit.”

It's plausible the 49ers hold Armstead out for the majority of training camp. There's no point in rushing him back into action this early.

"Coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that #49ers DL Arik Armstead sprained his MCL in practice and will be out a few weeks. The knee injury isn’t considered serious," said NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Arik Armstead has spent his entire seven-year NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers. During that span he's totaled 264 tackles and 28.5 sacks. He's one of the most disruptive defensive linemen in the National Football League.

As long as Armstead is healthy this upcoming season, the 49ers should have one of the best front sevens in all of football. That's why his health is of the upmost importance this training camp.

The 49ers begin the 2022 season on Sept. 11 against the Chicago Bears.
