The San Francisco 49ers made a surprising roster cut this Monday morning. The NFC West franchise has released veteran cornerback Darqueze Dennard.

Dennard had been working with the defense's first team at nickel cornerback so far in training camp. However, a rookie has impressed the coaching staff so much that it's willing to part ways with Dennard. That rookie is Samuel Womack, who shined in the team's recent preseason game.

The Niners are moving on from Dennard; a former first-round pick.

"#49ers released DB Darqueze Dennard. A bit of a surprise given that Dennard had been working with first-team often at nickel CB. A good sign for rookie Samuel Womack, it seems," said Nick Wagoner.

"Huge vote of confidence for rookie CB Sam Womack. The #49ers released: CB Darqueze Dennard, who had been lining up with the first team at nickel back. The following players have been waived: FB Josh Hokit, WR KeeSean Johnson, DL Tomasi Laulile," wrote Matt Maiocco.

The 49ers have hit it out of the park with their recent late draft picks in recent years. It appears Samuel Womack is the next gem.
