The San Francisco 49ers may have to find some more depth at the tight end position. The veteran Jordan Matthews is going to miss the entire 2022 season.
Matthews was seen limping off the practice field after running a route during warmups. He was later sporting crutches, indicating he may have suffered a serious injury. Unfortunately that's been confirmed.
The veteran 49ers tight end has suffered a season-ending injury after tearing his ACL during training camp. He'll spend the rest of the year recovering with aspirations to return in 2023.
An unfortunate setback for Matthews and significant hit to the Niners' tight end depth.
"#49ers tight end Jordan Matthews tore his ACL and is going on injured reserve. Happened on a route, non-contact early in Monday’s session. Really made strides in past year converting from wide receiver and was strong contender to make 53-man roster this season at TE," said Cam Inman.
Jordan Matthews made the position change from wide receiver to tight end a couple years ago. It's been an uphill battle for the veteran, but he's taken advantage of the opportunity. He's spent most of his tenure with the 49ers on the practice squad.
Moving forward, the 49ers have George Kittle, Tyler Kroft, Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley in the tight end room.
The Niners begin the 2022 season on Sept. 11 against the Chicago Bears.
