The San Francisco 49ers' defensive line depth took a significant hit during training camp last week. Veteran defensive lineman Maurice Hurst has suffered a season-ending injury.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters over the weekend that Hurst tore his biceps during training camp last week. The injury will end his season.
The 49ers made an official announcement this Monday that they have placed Hurst on the season-ending injured reserve. The team is signing defensive lineman Akeem Spence to take his place.
"The San Francisco 49ers have signed DL Akeem Spence to a one-year deal. In order to make room on the roster, the team has placed DL Maurice Hurst on the Injured Reserve List," the team announced.
A crushing blow for the 49ers.
Maurice Hurts took to Twitter to share his reaction to the tough news.
"I Appreciate all of the love and support from everyone, I really can’t begin to explain how much this hurts. I hope through my resiliency and this journey that i’m able to inspire those who follow me to keep pushing, work hard and never give up," he said.
Hurst was receiving high praise from his coaches and teammates to start training camp, making this loss even worse for the 49ers.
The good news is the NFC West franchise's biggest strength is their defensive line and its depth.
The 49ers begin the 2022 season on Sept. 11 against the Chicago Bears.
