Steelers Rookie Mason McCormick May Get Starting Opportunity
The last thing the Pittsburgh Steelers needed was an injury along their offensive line. They already have a slew of rookies and second-year players up front, so they could not afford to lose veteran guard Isaac Seumalo.
Seumalo suffered an injury last week that will keep the veteran out for 4-6 weeks. This leaves the Steelers in quite the quandary as the only players they have available are second-year player Spencer Anderson and this year’s rookie fourth-rounder Mason McCormick.
On a recent episode of the North Shore Drive Podcast, Brian Batko from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes the rookie will ultimately get the nod.
"Spencer Anderson usually is the next man up, but I think it's different preparing somebody to be a versatile backup who maybe has to step in, in-game, at any number of spots," said Batko. "I think with a whole week to prepare, getting Mason McCormick in there, essentially cashing in on a pick that a lot of people were surprised you made back in April."
McCormick was picked No. 119 overall in the fourth round out of South Dakota State. The team still had other needs, especially considering they already drafted two linemen last year and used their first two picks on offensive linemen in this year’s draft.
The Steelers took him anyway and seem to believe he has something to offer upfront. There is a very real possibility that McCormick starts Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons.
