Are Giants Making Wrong Move on Drew Lock vs. Tommy DeVito?
For the New York Giants, maybe there is no right answer.
Daniel Jones is now a Minnesota Vikings project. Tommy DeVito injured his forearm in his 2024 debut, a 30-7 blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Drew Lock, who the team passed over on that day, wasn’t much better on Thursday, when New York lost 27-20 to the Dallas cowboys.
With DeVito healthy enough to play in Week 14, the Giants had a decision to make.
Who will lead them into battle against the New Orleans Saints?
Head coach Brian Daboll is going with Lock. And there are some numbers that make the debate a compelling one.
Lock posted a third-percentile performance by expected points added per play and operated with a completion percentage of expected of -1.0. DeVito, against Tampa, was better by both marks, although the offense was unable to generate chunk gains and quickly fell behind.
DeVito isn’t going to make plays out of structure or impress with promising arm talent—it just is not his game. But by allowing the Giants to control the ball and limit opposing possessions, the path to victory lies in a strong defensive performance.
Lock, meanwhile, showcased the ability to create plays by himself, rushing for two of New York’s biggest gains of the evening on Thursday. This comes with the trade off of an increased turnover risk. It might be a gamble worth taking the rest of the way.
Daboll prefaced the decision on Friday by saying, “We’ve got to make sure we're taking care of the ball. Give our guys a chance down the field to make some plays.”
And it’s Lock that now gets that chance this week.
