Matt Eberflus acknowledges Bears fans' chants directed at him during embarrassing loss vs. Patriots
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is well aware of the lack of job security he has after a Week 10 home loss to the now-three-win New England Patriots.
The Bears have now gone two straight games without scoring a touchdown and mustered only a field goal in a 19-3 loss on Sunday.
Eberflus spoke with reporters after the game and acknowledged the Soldier Field crowd chanting for his firing but stated "it comes with the job."
Media members pressed about the offensive side of the ball and its issues, presenting Eberflus a question regarding if offensive coordinator Shane Waldron is the issue and if a change could be coming in the future.
"Like I said, we’ll look at everything — at everything from the top to the bottom," Eberflus said. "And making sure that we’re finding the answers to move the ball on the field, play better as a football team on offense, defense and special teams."
Chicago's offense was already one of the worst units in the NFL entering Sunday's contest but put on their worst showing of the season against the lowly Patriots, posting 142 total yards of offense and averaging 2.4 yards per play. They also had a terrible showing on third down, converting only 1-of-14 chances.
The Bears also punted a season-high eight times and turned the ball over twice on downs.
While Eberflus preached accountability for himself and his coaching staff, the same sentiment was echoed by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams on Sunday.
"It first starts with me. I had two to three plays in key moments of situational ball where it didn't click in my head," Williams said.
The No. 1 overall pick also was asked if he still had confidence in his head coach.
“Am I confident in my head coach? Yes, I am confident in my head coach. They brought me here for a reason. They brought all of us here for a reason. As players, when we’re in the locker room, we know how good we are, we know how good we can be, and right now we’re not executing. We’re not hitting on cylinders," he said.
Williams was sacked a season-high nine times against the Patriots as the offensive line was without four linemen heading into the game. Pass blocking has been a constant issue for Chicago this season as Williams has been sacked the most out of any other quarterback (38) in the NFL.
He finished completing 16-for-30 passes for 120 yards on the day, without throwing a touchdown or interception.
It should make for an interesting week, as the Bears next three weeks will feature matchups against all three NFC North opponents in succession: hosting the Green Bay Packers (6-3) on Nov. 17; hosting the Minnesota Vikings (7-2) on Nov. 24; and a trip to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions (7-1) on Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day.
