Caleb Williams Was Worth All the Hype
For the second week in a row, the Chicago Bears suffered a crushing home defeat in dramatic fashion against a division rival, this time losing on a walk-off field goal in overtime against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
But for the second week in a row, despite the heartbreaking loss, it was clear that the Bears have a superstar on their hands in rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Williams was billed as a generational talent, the kind of player who could finally give the Bears the true franchise passer they've been searching for their entire legendary existence. And though he's taken his share of rookie lumps throughout his first NFL campaign, Williams keeps showing flashes of that rare ability on a more consistent basis every week.
Williams showed off his incredible arm talent on multiple occasions, making a handful of tight-window throws that not many quarterbacks are capable of delivering:
His ability to make big throws in clutch moments was also on full display with the game on the line, setting up the game-tying field goal that sent the game into overtime with this laser to D.J. Moore:
Williams made big plays all game long, showing off his highlight-reel elusiveness and instincts, delivering big throws both from the pocket and while on the run after things broke down around him.
He completed 32 of his 47 pass attempts for 340 yards and a pair of touchdowns, didn't throw a single interception, and led the Bears with 33 yards rushing.
Williams also checked a franchise record off his to-do list, taking just 12 weeks to set the Bears' rookie record for passing yards in a season:
It's hard to blame Bears fans for being down in the dumps after letting yet another home game slip away to an NFC North rival at the last minute, but there are plenty of silver linings for those devoted supporters to take away from Sunday's performance, none greater than the fact that Williams continues to live up to the sky-high hype that followed him from the college ranks.
