Carolina Panthers Announce Official Quarterback Plan For 2nd Preseason Game

The Carolina Panthers will play their second preseason game of the year tonight vs. the New England Patriots. The team has a quarterback plan in place for the preseason exhibition.

Matt Rhule has decided to rest both Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold for tonight's preseason game. Instead, he's letting his third- and fourth-string guys get significant playing time.

The Panthers has announced rookie Matt Corral and P.J. Walker will alternate quarters. Walker will play the first and third quarters while Corral gets the second and fourth quarters. A big opportunity for both quarterbacks.

"It's two things; we want to see them both with the same groups, as best we can, so they both have the same set of receivers, and there's a consistency there," Rhule said. "And then we see them with the third group, so there's some consistency there.

"Then the second part, and this was coach McAdoo's idea, and his perspective, as a backup quarterback, you have to be ready to go in the game at a moment's notice, and you have to be able to excel and play well without having much of a chance to warm up. This is our way of simulating that for them, where they have to warm up and get cooled down and go in there and be hot; that's how I see it."

Walker is the more proven product and is expected to produce good results for the Panthers tonight. Corral, meanwhile, is still adjusting to the NFL game's speed.

The Panthers battle the Patriots tonight at 7 p.m. ET.
