Should Commanders Sign Ex All-Pro Receiver Michael Thomas?

The Washington Commanders are hoping that their homegrown talent can become breakout players, but could they sign former All-Pro Michael Thomas to fill a role?

The Washington Commanders parted ways with Jahan Dotson two weeks ago when they traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles. Their leading receiver, Terry McLaurin is still one of the best in the league, but what if they could add a former All-Pro to the roster to open things up?

Someone like, say, receiver Michael Thomas.

At one time, he was widely considered to be one of, if not the, best receiver in football. Lower leg injuries derailed his career for the better part of two seasons. He played sparingly until last year.

Thomas came back from injury to play the final 10 games of the season for the Saints before his contract expired.

In those 10 games, he caught 39 passes for 448 yards and a touchdown to prove he can still play.

Is he still the player who started his career for 4 straight seasons of 1,100+ yards? No. Is he the player who caught an NFL record 149 passes for 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns in 2019? Of course not.

But what he can be is a big-bodied receiver with great hands who can play outside the numbers and catch the deep ball. All of those things play to the strengths of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Thomas would add a veteran presence to the locker room as well as potentially provide big-play ability down the field.

It’s got to at least be worth the phone call, right?

The Commanders kick off their season on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET.
