On the Tuesday following their 28-20 Week 12 win over the New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys have made a somewhat surprising roster decision.
According to senior NFL reporter Jori Epstein, the Cowboys have waived defensive end Tarell Basham after the lineman appeared in just two games this season.
Basham, who led all Dallas defensive linemen with 627 snaps a season ago, will now be on the hunt for a fresh start with a new team.
"Cowboys have waived DE Tarell Basham. Basham played every game last year, his 627 defensive snaps most among 2021 Dallas D-linemen. But he'd played just 2 games this year, recently inactive. Now, room for a roster add, be it return from injury or otherwise.." Epstein tweeted Tuesday.
Basham was selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
After appearing in 15 games for Indianapolis during his rookie campaign, Basham was waived by the Colts just a few weeks into the 2018 season. He was then claimed by the Jets, where Basham spent the next two years before being released by New York and signing with the Cowboys in 2021.
In his first year with the Cowboys, Basham enjoyed arguably the most productive NFL season of his career. Playing in all 17 games - and starting six - Basham logged 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and 11 quarterback hits.
As a result of Basham's release today, Dallas now has an open spot on their 53-man roster.
With rumors swirling surrounding a link between Odell Beckham Jr. and Dallas, the decision to waive Basham on Tuesday has some Cowboys fans excited for a potential corresponding move.
"Now, why is that @obj" one Cowboys fan tweeted following Basham's release.
The Cowboys will look to win their third straight game in Week 13 when Dallas hosts the Indianapolis Colts.
