Cowboys Signing Stefon Diggs In Play As $100 Million Dak Prescott 'Big Move' in Free Agency
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys have a "Blow It Up'' plan which calls for the remodeling of the roster in 2025 fueled by a potential $100 million in cap room.
There is Cowboys Nation skepticism regarding owner Jerry Jones as a "buyer'' next spring because that doesn't fit this front office's habits of the last decade. Our ping-pong argument? Dallas didn't fully invest in winning in 2024 ... preferring to keep the franchise's salary cap "powder dry'' for a 2025 re-boot ...
And why would the Cowboys map out a plan to create all of that cap room with no intention of spending it? With no plan to spend it?
That's what's going on ... all of which can lead to Dallas owning a massive total of $100 million in cap space next March at the start of the NFL business year. (No, the contracts of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons will not get in the way of the plan; they are, rather, very much a part of it.)
We have detailed (see above link) how Dallas can (will?) get to the $100 million. And the next step for Cowboys Nation once that "first order of business'' is understood and accepted?
How will the Cowboys go about spending that money in the remodel? Which top free agents might they buy? You are allowed to dream big ... and so are players like Dak Prescott.
Dak this week offered a glimpse into just how much he knows about the plan, politely guiding an interviewer to Dallas' ability to sign "a big chess piece.''
Said Prescott: "I don't think my contract is going to (prevent) us from making any moves or doing anything that we need to in free agency. ... If that big chess piece or big piece comes up ...''
Pick a name. Or pick eight names. A lot of ideas - almost limitless ideas - can be in play here. One fascinating one worth speculating on: Stefon Diggs.
This offseason, the Bills - respectful of his four-time Pro Bowl skills but maybe tired of his act - shipped him off to Houston in trade. He's hurt and out for the season now (he's rehabbing a torn ACL) in this final year of his contract, which pays him like a star at $22 million for 2024.
His injury and his age he just turned 31) make him a fading star. We doubt teams are going to enter a $20 million APY bidding war.
But "affordable'' for Dallas? No doubt; this might even have to be a one-year "prove-it'' deal for Stefon. Attractive to his brother, Dallas star cornerback Trevon Diggs? Obviously. Alluring to Dak, who will surely want the Cowboys' "big chess piece'' moves to include offensive weaponry to line up alongside CeeDee Lamb?
Bet on it.
We're not necessarily suggesting that Prescott specifically has Stefon Diggs in mind here; his can be a more general concept. ... and it can be about "big chess pieces'' who are even more expensive and desirable than Stefon.
But have guys in the Dallas locker room talked about such a concept? Of course they have. And given the coming cap room, can those guys envision a revitalized Diggs on a short-term contract (due to the aforementioned "age' and act'') working as the No. 2 receiver alongside Lamb as a way to fuel Prescott's aerial game?
The Cowboys can have $100 million in cap room that says it's doable.
