Brian Schottenheimer’s first offseason as Dallas Cowboys head coach has the potential to set the wheels in motion to get the NFC East franchise back to being considered an NFC contender.
There’s no doubting that Dallas has a lot of roster needs and with only a select few draft picks, the Cowboys need those to hit better than last year’s class.
But there is also free agency, and yes, we can hear Jerry and Stephen Jones inhaling deeply when the topic of what the Cowboys could do this offseason and for ESPN, while they are right in their assessment of what Dallas needs, they are wrong in how it can be acquired.
“The Cowboys need to get their edge back in a hurry,” ESPN writes. “The NFC East won’t wait for them. The Eagles are atop the NFL, and the Commanders aren’t going anywhere. The major decision this offseason is whether to pay Micah Parsons a market-setting deal. Re-signing defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa should be a priority.
“And while Dallas will likely be strapped for cash once again due to top-heavy deals, it will need to get creative to address needs, including adding a No. 2 receiver, a running back and offensive line reinforcements.”
Right, let’s go through it.
Re-signing Micah Parsons is an obvious one, and so too is Osa Odighizuwa (though the rumored $25 million APY price tag seems too high), and the Cowboys’ need for a running back, receiver, and some offensive and defensive line reinforcements is well-known.
But ESPN states that Dallas will again be “strapped for cash,” and for regular readers here, you know that is far from the truth.
In fact, our own Mike Fisher has repeatedly detailed how, with a couple flicks of the switches on the contracts of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, coupled with a Parsons extension and others, the Cowboys could have up to $100 million in cap space to go free agency shopping.
Cash-strapped no more.
Don’t let the organization (or ESPN’s misinformation) fool you into thinking that the 2025 offseason will be as hard as 2024 because there is nothing to suggest that it will. Or, rather, nothing to suggest that is must be.
The Cowboys have the money to spend if they choose, and if the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl, coupled with the rise of the Washington Commanders and Jayden Daniels, isn’t enough to change the vibe and for Dallas to start spending, then we don’t know what ever will be that propellant.
But this narrative that the Cowboys will be cash-strapped in 2025 is one that needs to stop because the only thing stopping Dallas from spending … and that’s Dallas.
