Penei Sewell Is 'Man on a Mission' for Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions' first draft pick under the new regime was offensive lineman Penei Sewell.
Entering his third season, the talented right tackle is hungrier than ever to take his game and the team to the next level.
"There's a reason why he was the first pick we had two years ago, because we wanted to build around a guy like him," said Dan Campbell. "He's our foundation, man. He's one of those pillars that we talk about. He's something else. He's a man on a mission.
"I feel like we're a team on a mission. But, he is a man on a mission. And you talk about being wired, right? A guy that comes in every day and puts in the work," Campbell explained further. "And, he's got so much ability, but he's got the right attitude, too. And, I think that's what makes him dangerous, if you're the opponent. So, he's right where he needs to be. And, if he loses, it bothers him bad. And, that's what you want. You want a guy who believes that there's no way he should lose any rep, no matter who he's playing. And so, he's shown up. He's in shape. He's lean, he's mean and I'm glad he's ours."
Part of the reason the Lions' offensive line is considered one of the best units in the NFL is the willingness of the roster to grind and put in the work to improve on a daily basis.
“I want it all, man. Nothing less. That's it. As simple as that," Sewell stated. "I don't want to give you guys specifics, because that's between me and the man in the mirror. So, I want it all individually and individually, team wise, family wise.”
Aidan Hutchinson is much stronger
Battling against Aidan Hutchinson throughout training camp will certainly draw a significant amount of eyeballs.
The EDGE rushers on the team, including Charles Harris, James Houston and Hutchinson, will prove to be a solid test for Sewell on a daily basis.
"The one thing that I noticed about every EDGE is that they love to compete," said Sewell. "They are coming out each and every day with a purpose. And I like that, because it's going to get me better. And shout out to 'Hutch' for getting right in the offseason. He's a lot more stronger, I'll tell you that.”
On Day 5, Sewell got an up-close look at the strength of the former Wolverines defensive lineman, battling in one-on-one drills for two reps.
“Besides him being stronger, he's a lot more comfortable. You just see it,” said Sewell. “He's coming at a different speed. He knows the speed of the game. He knows what he's doing. He's got the playbook under his belt now."
Taylor Decker on rookie Colby Sorsdal
Sorsdal knows he needs to bridge the gap between what he learned in college with all of the responsibilities an offensive linemen has in the NFL.
Knowing that not being prepared or fully understanding responsibilities will result in getting beaten -- and beaten pretty badly -- at this level has given the rookie the added motivation to expedite the learning curve.
"I feel like he (Sorsdal) has a quiet confidence about himself,” Decker told reporters. “Sometimes, you’ll see young guys come in, and they’re kind of timid. He does not have that. He’s going to make mistakes along the way, but (Hank Fraley) Hank’s going to love it if you make a mistake, but you’re going full speed. So, he has that kind of quiet confidence about him, which you need to have on the offensive line.
"I haven’t had a ton of time to get to know him. I like him, I think he’s a good fit, but we need more time in our break time when we’re in our O-line room, eating our gushers and oatmeal cream pies, to make fun of each other to get to know him," Decker continued. "But, I think he’s a good addition. He’s going to mesh in really well, but I’m just going to need more time to get to know him.”
