Eagles Make Historic Saquon Barkley Announcement After Win vs. Panthers
The Philadelphia Eagles escaped with a 22-16 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. While the victory wasn’t the prettiest, it extended their impressive run to nine straight games and secured an NFC playoff berth with just four weeks remaining in the regular season after Week 14.
Though the Eagles' passing attack has struggled recently, their rushing game has been on fire, with Saquon Barkley, the former New York Giants running back, playing a pivotal role. In his first season with the Eagles, Barkley has arguably made the team’s ground game the best in the league.
On Sunday, Barkley etched his name into Eagles history by breaking LeSean McCoy's single-season rushing record of 1,607 yards, set back in 2013. Barkley is now the single-season rushing leader for the Eagles, a remarkable feat in his first year in Philadelphia.
Following the game, Barkley reflected on the significance of breaking the record and what it meant to be mentioned alongside some of the greatest running backs in Eagles history.
“I’d be lying to you if I said that wasn’t pretty cool. Having my name mentioned with that guy means a lot,” Barkley said, acknowledging the honor of joining the ranks of legendary Eagles players.
Barkley rushed 20 times for 124 yards on Sunday, further solidifying his place as one of the league's top running backs. His season totals are equally impressive: 266 carries, 1,623 rushing yards, and 11 touchdowns. With four games still remaining, Barkley has the opportunity to add even more to those numbers, keeping him firmly in the MVP conversation through Week 14.
His impact in just one season with Philadelphia is further proving why the New York Giants made a glaring mistake by letting him test free agency and failing to meet his contract demands.
Week in and week out, Barkley continues to show he has plenty left in the tank. Now, he’ll have the chance to showcase his talents in the postseason as the Eagles pursue as Super Bowl championship.
