The San Francisco 49ers are giving Trey Lance the reins to start the 2022 season. However, some believe it's only a matter of time before Kyle Shanahan reverts to Jimmy Garoppolo. Include ex-NFL head coach Sean Payton in that group.
Payton believes the 49ers will eventually switch back to Garoppolo. He may be right. Lance struggled in his 2022 season debut, completing just 13 of his 28 pass attempts for 164 yards with one pick against the Bears.
Garoppolo, meanwhile, has taken the 49ers to two NFC Championships in three seasons. He knows how to win.
“I think there are seven or eight teams that we’re gonna see, not because of injury, we’re gonna see more than one quarterback play,” Payton said on FS1’s “The Herd,” as transcribed by NBC Sports Bay Area, via NESN.com. “I think, and I believe, don’t kid yourself, that we’re gonna see Garoppolo back in that lineup.”
Payton added: “So here’s the pickle if you’re (49ers general manager) John (Lynch) and if you?re Kyle,” Payton said. “You drafted this kid so high. Man, it’s hard to sell to the guy upstairs writing the check that well, our little binky, our blanket, is Garoppolo, right? But we’re going to start this guy. We’re committed to starting him, but at some point, we’re not having the rest of the roster sitting there ready to win.”
If the 49ers really do move on from Trey Lance and revert back to Jimmy Garoppolo, they had better be sure. That would likely be the end of Lance's opportunity, barring a Garoppolo injury.
With that being said, it's hard to imagine Kyle Shanahan has Lance on such a short leash. He made this decision and he wants to make it work. It's too soon to move on from Lance.
Lance will try and bounce back this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
