Former San Francisco 49ers general manager John McVay, grandfather to Rams coach Sean McVay, has passed away.
The 49ers released a statement this Tuesday afternoon to announce John's passing. He was 91 years old.
"This is a very sad day for our organization and the entire football community," the statement reads. "John McVay was a driving force in constructing teams for our five Super Bowl titles. Most importantly, John was a Hall of Fame person who built genuine and sincere relationships with front office staff, coaches and players. John's commitment and contributions to the 49ers created the standard and tradition we strive to carry on today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McVay family."
John McVay is a key member of the San Francisco 49ers' legacy. He began in an administrative role in 1980, took a two year break in 1996 and returned to the organization in 1998 where he stayed for five more years.
The Niners won all of their five Super Bowls while John was a member of the organization.
We send our condolences to the McVay family during this difficult time.
