Jordan Love Credits Aaron Rodgers as a 'Huge Asset' in His Development
The Green Bay Packers have a knack for identifying elite quarterbacks, and with Jordan Love, it appears they've struck gold for the third time in a row.
After spending three years sitting behind Aaron Rodgers, Love, a first-round Draft Pick in 2020, finally got his chance to lead the Green Bay Packers in 2023, and he didn’t disappoint.
In the Utah State product's first year as QB1, Love threw for 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions, solidifying his status as the future of the Packers.
Love's season earned him a multi-year contract extension from the Packers in the offseason, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL.
But Love was quick to credit the man who came before him—Rodgers—for helping him get to this point. During an appearance on The Jim Rome Show, Love spoke about the impact Rodgers had on his development.
"Aaron was a huge asset," Love said. "I'm very grateful for my time with him... being able to watch him work every day and see how he handles his business. Aaron was great to me... In the QB room, we'd watch film together, and he'd share little bits and pieces, that I could write in my notes and learn from... seeing him check plays, understanding why he's checking, what he's seeing from the defense."
"So all those little pointers that, if I wasn't in the room with him, I probably wouldn't even know to this day. It was awesome just to be able to sit back and watch a Hall of Fame quarterback handle his business and go out there and compete every day... I learned a lot of lessons from Aaron, and he helped me a lot throughout the way."
It’s no secret that the transition and mentorship from Rodgers to Love was handled with more grace than the one from Brett Favre to Rodgers.
In the spirit of being fair, sharing notes with a player widely seen as your eventual replacement would be difficult, especially considering the sizable investment the front office used to select them as your heir apparent.
But Rodgers paid it forward and took Love under his wing, offering guidance that would prove invaluable once Love took over the starting job.
Now, with an impressive first season under his belt and a lucrative extension secured, Love is poised to lead the Packers into a new era. And while Love's the one making headlines now, he hasn’t forgotten the lessons learned from his predecessor.
