Indianapolis Colts Are Releasing Their Kicker This Tuesday

The Indianapolis Colts are making a change at the kicker position just one week into the 2022 season. The AFC South franchise is reportedly releasing kicker Rodrigo Blankenship. A search for a new kicker has commenced.

Blankenship, who's in his third season in the NFL, made two of his three field goal attempts in Week 1. He also converted both extra point attempts.

The Colts began the 2022 season with a 20-20 tie vs. the Houston Texans. Had Blankenship made all of his field goal attempts Indianapolis would have won the game. Now, the Colts are making a change.

"The #Colts are waiving kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, per source," said Tom Pelissero.

"The #Colts worked out a bunch of kickers today and likely will sign one or two to the practice squad, letting the competition continue," Pelissero added.

Blankenship struggled to consistently convert field goals in the 42-yard-and-under range. The Colts no doubt want more consistency in that area.

"#Colts not drafting a kicker or signing a veteran free agent this offseason to compete with Rodrigo Blankenship looks awful in hindsight. Scrambling for a new long-term kicker one week into the season. This one is on Ballard, folks," said Indy Source.

The Colts will have a new kicker in Week 2. Expect a signing soon.
