Vikings waive QB Jaren Hall, sign Brett Rypien

Hall's strong finish to the preseason earned him an initial spot on the roster but he's now replaced two days later.

The Minnesota Vikings have made a surprising roster move two days after NFL cutdown day.

Thursday morning, the team waived quarterback Jaren Hall and signed former Broncos, Rams, Seahawks, Jets and Bears quarterback Brett Rypien.

Hall, a 2023 fifth-round pick, finished the preseason strong, which created some doubt over whether he'd make it through waivers if he was cut on Tuesday. Instead, the Vikings now will try to sneak him through waivers two days later.

In Rypien, the Vikings add a more experienced option as the third-stringer. Over his five NFL seasons, Rypien has appeared in 10 games, completing 98 of 168 passes (58.3%) for 950 yards with 4 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

The 28-year-old also had a strong preseason, completing 24 of 34 passes (70.6%) for 335 yards and 3 touchdowns for Chicago. Comparatively, Hall, 26, was 26 of 48 (54.2%) for 264 with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

It's still possible the Vikings sign Hall to the practice squad if he clears waivers, but other teams will have a say in that.

Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah noted Thursday morning that they definitely want Hall back if he's open to joining the practice squad.

Nick Mullens is still expected to be the second-stringer behind starter Sam Darnold when the Vikings open the season on Sept. 8 at the New York Giants.
