Adam Schefter and ESPN have some explaining to do.
Jason Pierre-Paul is suing the worldwide leader and its valuable NFL Insider for exposing his medical records last summer after a fireworks accident. The lawsuit was filed in Miami Dade County in Florida and claims that JPP's privacy was violated. The exact amount of money JPP is seeking isn't specified, but the lawsuit says it "is an action for damages in excess of $15,000".
Schefter tweeted out the photo last summer of the actual document to verify his findings.
Later in an interview with SI.com, Schefter admitted that he could and should have done more to protect JPP's rights.
The lawsuit states in part: "This action arises out of ESPN reporter Schefter's blatant disregard for the private and confidential nature of the plaintiff's medical records, all so Schefter could show the world that he had 'supporting proof' of a surgical procedure."
It goes on to say Schefter "improperly obtained" the medical chart. In Florida, a patients' medical records can't be given or discussed with anyone not involved in their care, and that's what many believe Schefter violated.
ESPN and Schefter are keeping mum on the subject for the time being.
