Joe Douglas Responds to Lewis Cine Spurning Jets

New York's general manager hasn't spoken in months but offered fresh perspectives on many key points Thursday morning.

New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas hasn't spoken in front of reporters since the final day of the 2024 draft in April.

That changed Thursday morning.

Whether it was about the current contract dispute and holdout from Haason Reddick, the improved talent on the roster, or some of the underlying questions going into the new season, Douglas gave his thoughts on what the goals are for the 2024 Jets season.

One of the surprising questions the general manager needed to answer, though, was a free agent signing that never was. After previous reports Wednesday stated former first-round safety Lewis Cine would sign a deal with the Jets, Thursday morning brought forth new reports that the Georgia product changed his mind and signed a free-agent deal with the Buffalo Bills instead.

In response, Douglas was short and succinct with his explanation as to how the situation went down.

"Just a change of heart, I guess," Douglas said.

Cine spent most of the 2022 and 2023 seasons recovering from a broken leg suffered in his rookie season. In Buffalo, Cine will get a chance to receive more playing time than he would have with the Jets.

Now, the Jets will have to continue to trust their current safety room with how it is currently constructed more than anything else.
