Will McDonald Continues to Stand Out For Jets' In Sophomore Season

The former first-round pick has looked the part to this point entering the 2024 season.

There are few players on the New York Jets this season under more pressure than former first-round edge rusher Will McDonald.

The former 15th overall pick is coming off a slow start to his career, but is expecting to dominate in his sophomore season - especially with Haason Reddick remaining away from the team as he looks for a new deal.

Will McDonald - New York Jets

McDonald was general manager Joe Douglas' most interesting pick over the years as the Jets spurned their receiver and offensive line needs for the double down of an edge rusher who was inactive for some games in his rookie season.

Despite the slow start, Douglas and the Jets see big things coming for the Iowa State product.

"I think Will's had a superb camp, and I think Will's come in on a mission," Douglas said Thursday. "His skills are undeniable, and I feel like he can really bring some elite athleticism off the edge, his change of direction, and his speed off the ball, his counter, and he's one of those guys that constantly working to improve every day, so you'd love to see Will take that step that Jermaine (Johnson) took last year.

"Each person is different in their development, but I think we've seen a lot of positive practices, and positive ascension from Will."

McDonald is seen as a speed rusher going into his sophomore year, but if he can develop as a three-down edge rusher, the Jets could be in a position to have two young players ascending at the same time along the defensive line.

That's the goal at least.
