Jimmy Garoppolo's days as starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers have come to an end. He's been demoted to backup behind second-year Trey Lance. However, he won't just be sitting on the sidelines this season.
The San Francisco 49ers have revealed their role for Garoppolo this season. It appears he's going to be getting plenty of run on the scout team. Garoppolo is simulating Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields in practice this week, per Niners defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans.
At this time last year, Garoppolo was the starting quarterback for the 49ers. Now, he's playing scout-team quarterback while Lance runs the show.
"The scout-team role of Justin Fields is being played by … Jimmy Garoppolo," said Matt Barrows.
Trey Lance is obviously better suited to simulate the play of Justin Fields. But he's running the first-team offense. Garoppolo has the time to play scout-team quarterback this week and throughout the 2022 season.
The San Francisco 49ers begin their season this Sunday vs. the Chicago Bears. Garoppolo will be watching from the sideline.
