Chiefs Reveal 'Biggest Factor' In Patrick Mahomes & Xavier Worthy Connection
The Kansas City Chiefs offense unearthed Rashee Rice as a dynamite weapon last season, and now, with Xavier Worthy in their ranks, it appears lightning might strike twice.
With Rice developing into the Chiefs' No. 1 weapon last season and at the beginning of this year, Patrick Mahomes' confidence has grown with the second-year receiver.
Now comes the same opportunity with rookie Xavier Worthy.
Due to Rice's injury, Mahomes has a chance to build on his connection with the speed merchant, and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has detailed the one thing that helps Mahomes when getting used to a new receiver.
“Probably the patience is the biggest thing," Nagy said. "Rashee [Rice] took a little bit of time, a few plays occurred middle of the season where you're like as a coach you go, yeah, that's what we know he can get to. I think that was probably the same way, too, with Pat [Mahomes] when he saw a couple of those plays, and so, like, they're different receivers, Xavier [Worthy] and Rashee, but we can kind of see what their strengths, and weaknesses are. But patience is probably the biggest factor in this, but again, I'll continue to go back with Xavier, and Rashee was the same way, as these guys are smart kids that have high football IQs, so it makes that part of the process easier.”
The good thing for Worthy is that due to Rice being out for the season, he will now get ample opportunities to "learn on the go" with first-team reps in practice and also on the field.
Additionally, Worthy has been involved one way or another in every game for the Chiefs. Whether that be catching or running the football, so there are a multitude of ways that Andy Reid can get him into the mix.
And while patience is clearly needed for Worthy in Year 1, if he can have a similar year to Rice (a big if), then come next season, the Chiefs could have two serious weapons for the next decade.
