Kyle Shanahan Was Asked If Trey Lance Could Return For NFC Playoffs

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was seen being carted off the field Sunday during the team's 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Several hours later, and after uncertainty surrounding the severity of the injury, reports indicated that Garoppolo had suffered a broken left foot.

With Garoppolo now out for the rest of 2022, questions are being raised about San Francisco's plan at quarterback for the immediate future.

Despite rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy's solid play in Week 13, 49ers head coach Kyle Shahahan was asked Monday if it was in the realm of possibility to see Trey Lance make a return for a playoff push.

Unfortunately for 49ers fans, Shanahan told reporters, "from what I’ve been told, no."

"From what I’ve been told, no. He’s not physically able to. If he could, hell yeah. But right now, I’ve been told no on that," Kyle Shanahan said of the possibility of Trey Lance returning for a postseason run, according to Tim Kawakami.

Trey Lance suffered what appeared to be a season-ending ankle injury in San Francisco's Week 2 clash with the Seattle Seahawks.

While fans never received official word that Lance was done for the year, his gruesome injury - a fibula fracture and associated ligament damage - made many assume the worst.

Should Lance's recovery progress enough to warrant activation, he'll likely compete with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy.

Filling in for Garoppolo on Sunday, the former Iowa State product Purdy completed 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards and a pair of touchdowns alongside just one interception.

If Purdy continues to manage games and limit turnovers, the 49ers may not even need to activate Lance and tempt potential re-injury. A strong defense, running game and a handful of highly-talented skill position players makes life easier for whoever is under center in San Francisco.

Purdy is in line to make his first NFL start this coming Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
