Baker Mayfield has a new team, having been claimed by the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, a day after he was released by the Carolina Panthers.
Looks like he'll wear a new uniform number, too.
The Rams announced on social media that Mayfield will wear No. 17.
Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, wore No. 6 during his four-year stint with the Cleveland Browns and earlier this season with the Carolina Panthers.
However, that number is already taken on the Rams' roster by rookie cornerback Derion Kendrick. NFL rules prohibit players from changing uniform numbers during the season while playing for the same team.
Perhaps the new uniform number will help Mayfield get a fresh start in Los Angeles. He struggled with the Panthers, completing 57.8 percent of his passes and throwing six touchdowns versus six interceptions in seven games. He asked for his release after being demoted to third on the team's depth chart.
It's possible that Rams fans will see Mayfield in action in his new uniform as soon as Thursday. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Mayfield would fly to Los Angeles on Tuesday evening and that the Rams had already faxed him a copy of the playbook.
The Rams face the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is not available for the contest, as the Rams placed him on injured reserve last week.
If Mayfield is unable to get prepared in time for Thursday's game, either John Wolford or Bryce Perkins will lead the Ram offense.
